La documentation antique conservee, litteraire et materielle, permet d'etudier comment Rome se percoitlorsqu'elle est vaincue et comment les ennemis des Romains celebrent leurs victoires contre la cite latine; autrement dit, le role determinant des echecs militaires dans les transformations institutionnelles, religieuses et civiques de Rome entre le VIIIe et le milieu du IIIe siecle avant notre ere.
