Plus les années passent et plus se renforce l'impression diffuse qu'il est placé dans une cage, entourée de barreaux invisibles. Appauvri, insulté, privé de liberté, endormi par un système qui tend à inhiber son action, interdit d'agir au nom de l'Etat de droit, même pour se défendre, il a le sentiment de sombrer dans une ère d'apathie généralisée, de léthargie confuse.
Face à ce qui apparaît comme un projet totalitaire d'ingénierie sociale programmée, de destruction générale non seulement des libertés individuelles mais aussi de la vie des nations, de leur histoire, cet essai voudrait, en s'appuyant sur la pensée d'Henri Laborit, donner les moyens au lecteur de comprendre comment sortir du labyrinthe où l'on tente de l'enfermer, depuis plusieurs dizaines d'années. Trente ans après la mort d'Henri Laborit, le contenu du message de cet exceptionnel esprit scientifique, médecin militaire, chercheur, directeur de laboratoire, découvreur des neuroleptiques et des premières techniques d'anesthésie chimique, demeure encore à déchiffrer. Cette analyse tente de réactualiser en la prolongeant, la réflexion de l'auteur de La Nouvelle grille, Eloge de la fuite et La Colombe assassinée. Elle insiste, notamment, sur la possibilité de construire une philosophie de la liberté fondée sur la notion de néocortex ou cerveau transcendant.
