This annotated edition of Noël Du Fail's Propos rustiques, Baliverneries, Contes et discours d'Eutrapel offers readers a captivating glimpse into 16th-century French society. Du Fail, writing under the pseudonym Eutrapel, presents a collection of rustic tales, witty anecdotes, and insightful discourses that reflect the customs, beliefs, and everyday life of the period. This edition, edited by Joseph Marie Guichard, includes an introductory essay exploring Du Fail's life and works, providing valuable context for understanding his unique literary style and social commentary.
Propos rustiques showcases Du Fail's mastery of language and his keen observation of human nature. The stories, often humorous and satirical, offer a rich tapestry of rural life, capturing the voices and experiences of peasants, artisans, and nobles alike. This edition is a valuable resource for scholars and anyone interested in Renaissance literature, French history, and the enduring power of storytelling.
