Bacon fut avocat, conseiller du roi, ministre de la justice et... philosophe. Au debut du XVIIe siecle, il proposa une reforme du savoir en meme temps qu'une reforme des institutions du savoir. La connaissance n'est pas une oeuvre individuelle, elle est une tache collective. Le philosophe, ne saurait donc se distraire de la communaute de ses semblables et il doit d'abord les persuader du bien-fonde de son entreprise. Or il n'a d'autre moyen pour cela que la philosophie. Le plan de cet ouvrage est simple: apres une biographie relatant la vie peu banale de Bacon, une deuxieme partie analyse les differents moments du projet general de l'Instauratio magna. La troisieme partie presente chacune des oeuvres majeures du Lord Chancellor a la lumiere de l'intention a la fois philosophique, pedagogique et politique qui fut la sienne.
