Evagre le Pontique fut moine aux Kellia, dans le desert de Basse-Egypte, a la fin du IVe siecle. Dans les rudes conditions de vie des moines egyptiens, il ecrivit une oeuvre theologique importante, nourrie par sa culture savante et par la tradition spirituelle du desert. Mais apres sa mort, il fut condamne pour origenisme. Tout en exercant une profonde influence, son oeuvre connut alors bien des vicissitudes. De nos jours le patient travail des chercheurs lui restitue peu a peu son visage authentique. Antoine Guillaumont fait ici le bilan de nos connaissances sur la vie et l'oeuvre d'Evagre, dont la doctrine retrace les differentes etapes du progres spirituel et se distingue par la finesse des analyses psychologiques.
