Persée is a French opera in five acts and a prologue by Jean-Baptiste Lully, with a libretto by Philippe Quinault, based on the myth of Perseus. It was first performed on 18 April 1682 at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in Paris. As a tragédie en musique, it combines elements of spoken drama and sung sections, typical of the French Baroque opera style.
Quinault's libretto draws heavily from Ovid's telling of Perseus's adventures, focusing on the hero's triumph over Medusa and his rescue of Andromeda. Lully's score is notable for its rich orchestration and expressive vocal writing, reflecting the grandeur and emotional depth sought by the court of Louis XIV.
