Il est un certain nombre de problèmes qui ont constamment préoccupé les hommes, mais il n'en est peut-être pas qui ait semblé généralement plus difficile à résoudre que celui de l'origine du Mal, auquel se sont heurtés comme à un obstacle infranchissable la plupart des philosophes, et surtout les théologiens: « Si Deus est, unde Malum ? Si non est, unde Bonum ? Ce dilemme est en effet insoluble pour ceux qui considèrent la Création comme l'oeuvre directe de Dieu, et qui, par suite, sont obligés de le rendre également responsable du Bien et du Mal. On dira sans doute que cette responsabilité est atténuée dans une certaine mesure par la liberté des créatures; mais, si les créatures peuvent choisir entre le Bien et le Mal, c'est que l'un et l'autre existent déjà , au moins en principe, et, si elles sont susceptibles de se décider parfois en faveur du Mal au lieu d'être toujours inclinées au Bien, c'est qu'elles sont imparfaites; comment donc Dieu, s'il est parfait, a-t-il pu créer des êtres imparfaits ?
Il est évident que le Parfait ne peut pas engendrer l'imparfait, car, si cela était possible, le Parfait devrait contenir eu lui-même l'imparfait à l'état principiel, et alors il ne serait plus le Parfait. L'imparfait ne peut donc pas procéder du Parfait par voie d'émanation; il ne pourrait alors que résulter de la création « ex nihilo ; mais comment admettre que quelque chose puisse venir de rien, ou, en d'autres termes, qu'il puisse exister quelque chose qui n'ait point de principe ? D'ailleurs, admettre la création « ex nihilo , ce serait admettre par là même l'anéantissement final des êtres créés, car ce qui a eu un commencement doit aussi avoir une fin, et rien n'est plus illogique que de parler d'immortalité dans une telle hypothèse; mais la création ainsi entendue n'est qu'une absurdité, puisqu'elle est contraire au principe de causalité, qu'il est impossible à tout homme raisonnable de nier sincèrement, et nous pouvons dire avec Lucrèce: « Ex nihilo nihil, ad nihilum nil posse reverti.
Il ne peut rien y avoir qui n'ait un principe; mais quel est ce principe ? et n'y a-t-il en réalité qu'un Principe unique de toutes choses ? Si l'on envisage l'Univers total, il est bien évident qu'il contient toutes choses, car toutes les parties sont contenues dans le Tout; d'autre part, le Tout est nécessairement illimité, car, s'il avait une limite, ce qui serait au-delà de cette limite ne serait pas compris dans le Tout, et cette supposition est absurde. Ce qui n'a pas de limite peut être appelé l'Infini, et, comme il contient tout, cet Infini est le principe de toutes choses. D'ailleurs, l'Infini est nécessairement un, car deux infinis qui ne seraient pas identiques s'excluraient l'un l'autre; il résulte donc de là qu'il n'y a qu'un Principe unique de toutes choses, et ce Principe est le Parfait, car l'Infini ne peut être tel que s'il est le Parfait.
