On croit que le mot orphelin désigne seulement celui qui a perdu ses deux parents, enfant, d'un seul coup. Il est bien plus large. Il y a celui qui a perdu un père ou une mère à n'importe quel âge, celui qu'on a confié, placé, ballotté de foyer en foyer, et celui qu'on pourrait dire orphelin de parents vivants: ces pères et ces mères là physiquement, mais absents par la maladie, l'alcool ou l'incapacité d'aimer, et qui n'ont jamais tenu leurs promesses.
Si vous vous reconnaissez, vous connaissez ces petites phrases qui piquent - et tes parents, ils font quoi ?, tu rentres chez eux pour les fêtes ? - et le réflexe de changer de sujet pour donner le change. Vous appartenez à une immense famille silencieuse, dont les membres ne se connaissent pas mais se comprendraient d'un seul regard.
Ce livre repose sur une distinction qui change tout: celle entre un vide, qui n'est rien, et un manque, qui est la trace de ce qui compte. Grandir avec un manque, ce n'est pas pousser dans un désert: c'est partir d'un sol plus abrupt, mais fertile. Le but n'est donc pas de combler l'absence - c'est impossible - mais de cesser d'être le spectateur de son histoire pour en redevenir le narrateur.
Au fil de ces pages, vous découvrirez:
- pourquoi certaines peines n'ont droit ni à rituel ni à condoléances, et comment nommer enfin ce deuil sans permission;
- comment séparer les faits de l'histoire qu'un enfant s'en était racontée ( si l'on m'a laissé, c'est que je ne valais rien ), grâce à un simple travail à deux colonnes;
- la différence entre un moteur sain, qui pousse vers ce qu'on aime, et un moteur toxique, qui ne fait que fuir le sentiment de ne rien valoir;
- pourquoi recevoir est souvent plus difficile que donner, pour qui a appris très tôt à se rendre indispensable;
- ce qu'est un tuteur de résilience, cette présence le long de laquelle on se redresse - et qu'on peut rencontrer, ou devenir, à tout âge;
- ce que veut vraiment dire briller ici: non pas éblouir, mais trouver sa paix et occuper enfin sa juste place.
N'attendez ni recette miracle ni leçon de courage. Ce livre se refuse aussi à faire de chaque orphelin un modèle inspirant: ce serait poser une pression injuste de plus sur des épaules qui ont déjà beaucoup porté. Il avance autrement, par des repères sobres et une voix qui accompagne au lieu d'ordonner, sans cacher qu'un professionnel reste précieux le jour où la douleur déborde.
On ne réécrit pas le passé, mais on peut changer le récit qu'on en fait.
