Sa silhouette se reconnaît au premier coup d'oeil sur n'importe quelle caricature du monde, et son nom est devenu un mot courant pour dire l'ambition et la démesure. Pourtant, l'homme réel reste une énigme. On récite ses batailles comme des dates d'école, en oubliant qu'il a refondé un pays autant qu'il l'a entraîné dans la guerre.
Né le 15 août 1769 à Ajaccio, dans une Corse française depuis un an à peine; mort prisonnier sur un rocher de l'Atlantique. Entre ces deux îles, il a tenu l'Europe dans sa main. Ce récit suit toute sa trajectoire, de l'écolier solitaire à l'empereur déchu, pour en expliquer l'enchaînement plutôt que pour l'admirer ou l'accuser.
Au coeur du livre, une idée simple: Napoléon fut deux hommes en un seul, le soldat et le légiste, et il n'a jamais voulu choisir. La même énergie sans repos qui a doté la France d'un État moderne l'a poussé à ne jamais cesser de vaincre - jusqu'à la défaite de trop. Sa grandeur et sa perte coulent de la même source.
Au fil de ces pages, vous découvrirez:
- le boursier de Brienne, raillé pour son accent, qui dévore Plutarque et choisit l'artillerie, la seule arme où l'on s'élève par le calcul et non par la naissance;
- le siège de Toulon et son petit Gibraltar, où un capitaine de vingt-quatre ans devient général en repérant le seul point qui fait tomber une ville entière;
- la campagne d'Italie, le surnom de petit caporal gagné au pont de Lodi, et le jeune chef qui signe seul la paix et brade Venise, libre depuis mille ans;
- les années studieuses du Consulat, d'où sortent le baccalauréat, la Légion d'honneur, le cadastre et l'état civil, ce cadre invisible dans lequel vit encore la France;
- l'engrenage espagnol et le désastre de Russie, où l'espace et le nombre finissent par anéantir sa méthode et fauchent des classes d'âge entières;
- l'exil où il façonne lui-même sa propre légende, le retour de ses cendres aux Invalides en 1840, et le mythe que Tolstoï puis le cinéma ne cesseront de réinventer.
Ce livre refuse les deux paresses habituelles, le piédestal et le procès. Partout, il démêle ce qui est attesté de ce que la légende a brodé - le petit Napoléon qui mesurait pourtant un mètre soixante-huit, les mots fameux qu'il n'a sans doute jamais prononcés. Et jamais la beauté d'une manoeuvre n'y fait oublier son prix: le reniement de 1802 qui ramène l'esclavage aux colonies, la dépendance où le Code enferme les femmes, le sang d'une génération versé sur les champs de bataille d'Europe.
On ne se dispute pas deux siècles durant à propos d'un homme ordinaire.
