Il s'agit de son premier dialogue compose en langue vulgaire, l'italien, publie a Londres en 1584.Du coucher du soleil au lever du jour, cinq savants debattent avec Bruno de la science copernicienne. Celui-ci s'oppose aux professeurs d'Oxford, bons aristoteliciens, en leur expliquant la portee revolutionnaire de Copernic: la Terre n'est plus au centre de l'univers, et il existe meme une infinite de mondes et d'univers.
Comme toujours, Bruno, a l'image de Rabelais, melange la farce et la pensee, le comique et la reflexion philosophique, le serieux et le grotesque va leur donner l'une des oeuvres les plus importantes de la Renaissance.Notre edition est la premiere au monde a se fonder sur les pages modifiees a la derniere minute par Bruno chez l'imprimeur, lors de la premiere edition londonienne: meme en italien, cette version n'avait jamais ete retablie. Yves Hersant, qui en avait propose une traduction aux editions de l'Eclat sous le titre Le Banquet des cendres, en donne donc ici la premiere version integrale.
