At the twilight of his life, the legendary boxer Joe Louis is prisoner of a wheelchair and paraded around Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas like a human trophy. But Joe himself has settled into a deep silence, and he remembers his past... A childhood under the protection of his Cherokee born mother, Lillie, and the Indian legends handed down by his grandfather White Bull but also the painful absence of his father unable to face the heavy responsibilities of raising a family: six brothers and sisters living in the heart of Alabama on a cotton plantation. When the family moves to Detroit, Joe discovers boxing and embarks on the road to fame. His amazing career will take him to the White House to meet President Roosevelt and make him an inspiring American success symbol for Blacks as well as Whites during the Second World War. For twelve years he remains world-champion, an all-time record. But, outside of the ring, life had other, more difficult challenges and Joe lost his footing in the ruthless world of Hollywood. Abandoned by his family, he accepts a display-case role in Caesar's Palace.
But between the long, loud, glittery nights of Vegas and the warm soft dreams of his Native American village, Joe slowly sinks away. He hears the snow burn like the huge white cotton field of his childhood. Christian Montaignac has written for the celebrated sports newspaper l'Equipe since 1967. His book De la belle aube au triste soir earned him the Antoine-Blondin Award and the Award for Best Sports Literature.
