Lyon fut la seule ville de province dans laquelle Martin Luther King donna une conférence lors de sa tournée européenne en mars 1966. Il était accompagné par Alexandre Payot, un Français expatrié aux États-Unis. Son rôle était modeste mais important. C'est lui qui traduisait les propos de King lors de son discours à Lyon.
