Parti pour l'Italie en 1573, le jeune peintre flamand Karel van Mander y decouvre les Vies des plus excellents peintres, sculpteurs et architectes de Giorgio Vasari, et bientot lui vient l'idee d'entreprendre un travail equivalent sur les artistes originaires des anciens Pays-Bas espagnols, des Provinces-Unies et de l'Allemagne. De retour dans son pays, il redige patiemment, en se documentant avec soin, ses Vies des peintres des Pays-Bas et de l'Allemagne. Finalement publiees a Haarlem en 1604, elles vaudront a l'auteur une renommee bien plus grande que sa peinture - comme ce fut le cas pour Vasari.
A l'exemple de celui-ci, Van Mander a compose son ouvrage en deux parties: une longue evocation des maitres du passe, suivie d'une presentation de l'oeuvre de ses contemporains. On y trouvera donc les biographies de certains peintres aujourd'hui oublies, tandis que d'autres ont eclaire leur epoque de leur genie, tels les Van Eyck, Hugo van der Goes, Durer, Bosch, Holbein ou Bruegel. Car Van Mander entend demontrer que les peintres du Nord, remarquables des le xve siecle par leur technique innovante, leur maitrise du paysage ou du portrait, n'ont fait que revivifier leur art au contact des antiquites et des maitres modernes d'Italie. L'ouvrage se veut ainsi une reponse fiere a un Vasari affirmant la suprematie de la Renaissance italienne sur les autres ecoles europeennes.
