Le Livre des peintres a ete publiee en 1604 par le Hollandais Karel Van Mander ( 1548-1606). Cet ouvrage, d'une importance considerable pour l'histoire de l'art, est l'equivalent des Vies des peintres de Vasari pour les peintres du Nord. Van Mander a d'ailleurs rencontre Vasari a Florence et voulu faire un livre du meme ordre. Du meme ordre, mais plus vif, plus alerte, plus humain aussi, et moins au service d'une ecole que celui du Florentin, Le Livre des peintres raconte la vie des plus grands peintres des Pays-Bas et de l'Allemagne avec force details et anecdotes, tout en etant une source de premiere main. Van Eyck, Jerome Bosch, Albert Durer, Hans Holbein, Pierre Brueghel, Lucas Cranach sont parmi les artistes dont Van Mander raconte la vie dans ce volume. Veronique Gerard-Powell, auteur de la preface et des notes, enseigne l'histoire de l'art a l'Universite de Paris-VI.
