L'histoire de l'instruction publique dans l'empire romain a pour nous un intérêt particulier: nous y trouvons les origines de notre propre enseignement. Nos écoles de la renaissance doivent beaucoup à celles du IVe siècle, et en ce moment encore il nous arrive souvent de continuer sans le savoir des traditions inaugurées sous Auguste ou sous Vespasien. Pour bien connaître notre système d'éducation, il me semble qu'il convient de le prendre à sa source. Nous le comprendrons mieux si nous savons d'où il est sorti et comment il s'est formé. C'est une étude pour laquelle les documents ne nous manquent pas; je vais essayer de les réunir et de les mettre sous les yeux du lecteur...
