Les lansquenets et les mercenaires, voici un sujet fascinant pour nos contemporains (du moins dans le monde occidental) vivant dans une société largement étrangère aux choses de la guerre, voire pacifiste. Ce livre a pour but de faire découvrir à ceux, qui sont néanmoins ouverts à l'idée de s'y intéresser, une époque qui fut avant tout marquée par la guerre et en aucun cas par le pacifisme.
L'existence de ces lansquenets et de ces mercenaires présupposaient des armées privées dont l'apparition avait deux causes distinctes mais interdépendantes. La première était une erreur inhérente à la structure politique du XVIIe siècle: les gouvernements n'étaient pas préparés pour créer ce corps de métier. Le développement de l'artillerie et du mousquet avait non seulement révolutionné la stratégie et la tactique, mais aussi la composition des armées. Les troupes de paysans avec leurs armes artisanales et les chevaliers dans leurs armures brillantes ne pouvaient absolument pas résister au feu d'une première ligne bien entraînée de mousquetaires ni à leurs piquiers.
Mais d'un autre côté, les mousquetaires et les piquiers ne pouvaient pas être utilisés sans entraînement ni discipline. Un mousquet à chargement par la bouche d'un mètre et demi de long n'était pas une arme facile à manier. Ainsi, son canon devait reposer sur un support en bois fourchu, la fourquine, pendant que la charge explosait, et les piquiers devaient protéger les mousquetaires lors du rechargement après chaque tir. Dans la formation de combat classique, une rangée de mousquetaires avançait et tirait, puis reculait derrière une rangée de piquiers afin de recharger. Ce processus devait être répété avec la plus grande précision. Il s'agissait d'une technique de guerre qui exigeait de l'organisation et, en outre, un haut niveau de compétence.
La guerre était en effet devenue un commerce. Incapables de trouver un système satisfaisant pour le recrutement et l'entretien d'une telle armée, les États se sont tournés vers des grands entrepreneurs de guerre - des soldats professionnels qui vendaient les services de leurs armées au plus offrant. En effet, à cette époque, plus encore qu'à d'autres, la guerre était un commerce et rien d'autre, et il est donc justifié de qualifier ces mercenaires d'artisans de la mort - mais sans l'attitude moralisatrice et présomptueuse des pacifistes actuels.
Les hommes qui constituaient la matière première de ces armées - c'est-à -dire les mercenaires - venaient de toute l'Europe. C'étaient des gars coriaces, des desperados et des aventuriers qui se louaient à tous ceux qui voulaient les payer. Leur métier consistait à tuer, et il leur était indifférent que leurs victimes soient allemandes, françaises ou anglaises, catholiques, luthériennes ou calvinistes. Lorsque ces artisans de la mort étaient faits prisonniers, ils s'engageaient souvent dans l'armée de celui qui les avait capturés. S'ils n'étaient pas payés, ils quittaient le drapeau et désertaient. S'ils n'étaient pas nourris, ils se livraient au pillage. La tâche de maintenir la discipline dans une telle armée - que ne soudait aucun sentiment de loyauté, aucune langue ou nationalité communes, ni aucun dévouement réel à une cause - ne pouvait être résolue à long terme par aucun général. C'était d'autant plus vrai que chaque armée était rapidement entourée d'un très grand nombre de civils - serviteurs, nettoyeurs, cantiniers et bien d'autres encore. Tous ceux qui faisaient ainsi partie d'une armée et de sa suite étaient en fait sans domicile fixe et dépendaient entièrement de l'armée - c'est-à -dire de leur commandant - quant à leur subsistance.
