Ismène, Pastorale Heroique is a significant example of 18th-century French opera, with words by François-Augustin Paradis de Moncrif, music by Rebel et Francoeur, and dances by Dehesse. This work represents the genre of 'pastorale heroique', blending pastoral themes with heroic elements, a popular form during the period. The libretto provides insight into the dramatic and literary conventions of French opera, reflecting the courtly tastes and artistic ideals of the era.
This edition offers a valuable resource for scholars and performers interested in the history of French music and theater. 'Ismène' exemplifies the collaborative nature of opera production, showcasing the contributions of librettists, composers, and choreographers in creating a unified artistic experience. Its enduring appeal lies in its combination of lyrical beauty, dramatic intensity, and refined elegance.
