Autrefois, on attribuait les humeurs aux substances, bonnes ou mauvaises, qui circulent dans le corps. Et c'est par un dérèglement des organes de production qu'on expliquait les sautes d'humeur qui nous traversent de temps à autre. Le plus souvent, on regardait ces épisodes avec indulgence, sinon avec patience, car on les savait aussi brefs que soudains. Mais parfois, à la longue, on craignait que le caractère, tel une éponge fragile, ne s'imbibe trop au point de se gâter durablement. L'âme, aussi, pouvait en prendre un coup. La science a changé tout ça mais le dessin est resté un calmant efficace tant pour l'artiste que pour ceux qui le fréquentent.
