Le dernier colloque auquel a participé Derrida aux États-Unis (en 2001) avait pour objet de croiser l'un de ses ouvrages les plus déroutants, Circonfession, et Les Confessions de saint Augustin (dont on célébrait le jubilé). L'expérience de sa mère mourante avait amené le philosophe à se replonger dans l'ouvrage d'Augustin, au point d'y découvrir un des fils conducteurs de sa vie.
Dans ce colloque, on entend, bien sûr, la voix unique de Derrida, on l'écoute dialoguer in vivo avec les plus grands spécialistes de la patristique mais aussi avec des philosophes contemporains, dont certains étaient ses amis les plus proches. Le dialogue est d'autant plus fécond que s'y ajoute un autre grand augustinien du postmodernisme français: Jean-François Lyotard.
Aussi riche sur Augustin que sur Derrida, ce volume renouvelle en profondeur la vision qu'on peut avoir des deux oeuvres. Par leur portée épistémologique, certaines contributions font pour Derrida ce que Veyne avait fait pour Foucault en écrivant son Comment Foucault a révolutionné l'histoire. D'autres, comme les essais de Caputo et de De Vries, notamment, rendent à la pensée de Derrida sa véritable dimension théologique.
