Ce livre est composé de deux recueils d'enseignements, dont le seul but est d'aviver cette flamme de l'attention discriminante. Le premier recueil comprend des enseignements de Râmana Maharshi inédits en français, extraits du journal de son disciple Annamalai Swâmî; le second recueil réunit 36 entretiens de ce même disciple, avec des visiteurs venus de tous horizons.
Pour beaucoup d'observateurs, Shrî Râmana Maharshi ne fut pas à proprement parler un Gourou, et n'eut jamais de véritables disciples. Il est vrai que le sage d'Arunâchala n'accorda jamais publiquement d'initiation formelle. Cependant, dans le récit d'Annamalai Swâmî (Une vie auprès de Râmana Maharshi, Éditions Discovery), il apparaît d'évidence que le Maharshi fut bel et bien un Maître ( Gourou en sanskrit), hors norme certes - par son propre itinéraire spirituel, ainsi que par sa façon de jouer le rôle de Maître - mais Maître tout de même, et comme tel, entouré de disciples et d'aspirants disciples.
Annamalai Swâmî fut un élève exceptionnel, tant par l'ardeur de sa dévotion que par l'extraordinaire ressemblance de sa Présence avec celle de son Gourou. Son nom, Annamalai, signifie montagne inaccessible, et lui fut donné par Shrî Râmana lui-même. C'est aussi le nom tamil du mont sacré Arunâchala, devant lequel toutes les montagnes de camphre ne peuvent que se consumer et disparaître, cédant la place au Soi unique, l'Absolu.
