Avant d'aborder les 100 qualités, il est nécessaire d'établir des bases. Que signifie la vertu ? Qu'est-ce que cela signifie, au fond, d'être vertueux ?
Le mot vertu tire son origine du latin * virtus* , qui désignait à l'origine la force, la puissance et l'excellence propres à l'homme ( *vir *). Les Grecs, avant nous, utilisaient le terme *areté* , que l'on peut traduire par excellence ou accomplissement de la finalité . Pour un Grec ancien, la vertu était indissociable de la vie concrète: l' *areté * d'un cheval était de bien courir; l' *areté* d'un oeil, de bien voir; l' *areté* d'un être humain, de bien vivre, de réaliser pleinement sa nature.
Cette première intuition nous donne déjà un indice important: être vertueux ne consiste pas à suivre un ensemble de règles arbitraires imposées par une autorité extérieure. Il s'agit plutôt de s'épanouir pleinement en tant qu'être humain.
Aristote, le grand philosophe grec, a consacré l'une de ses oeuvres les plus importantes, l'Éthique à Nicomaque , à l'étude de ce qui rend la vie humaine excellente. Sa conclusion fondamentale est que la vertu est une disposition acquise à agir selon la droite raison. Autrement dit, être vertueux, c'est posséder un caractère tel que, naturellement, presque spontanément, nous tendons à faire le bien.
Pour Aristote, la vertu n'est pas innée. Nous naissons avec la capacité de devenir vertueux, mais cette capacité ne se réalise que par la pratique. De même que l'on apprend à jouer d'un instrument en jouant, on apprend à être juste en agissant avec justice, à être courageux en agissant avec courage, à être tempérant en exerçant la maîtrise de soi.
La vertu est donc une habitude, mais non pas au sens mécanique du terme. C'est une habitude intelligente, une seconde nature que l'on acquiert par la répétition des choix. L'homme vertueux n'agit pas correctement par hasard ou par contrainte, mais parce qu'il est devenu ainsi.
Un autre aspect fondamental de la conception aristotélicienne est l'idée de juste milieu. Chaque vertu représente l'équilibre entre deux extrêmes vicieux: l'un, l'excès, l'autre, le défaut. Le courage, par exemple, est le juste milieu entre la lâcheté (défaut) et la témérité (excès). La générosité se situe entre l'avarice (défaut) et la prodigalité (excès). La patience se situe entre la colère (excès) et la passivité (défaut). Être vertueux exige donc du discernement, c'est-à -dire la capacité de trouver, dans chaque situation concrète, le point d'équilibre précis.
Aristote appelait cela la phronesis - la sagesse pratique, la prudence. C'est l'intelligence appliquée à la vie morale. Sans elle, les vertus peuvent devenir aveugles; avec elle, elles deviennent précises et adaptées à chaque circonstance.
La tradition stoïcienne, quant à elle, a ajouté une nuance importante: la vertu est le seul véritable bien, et le vice le seul mal. Les circonstances extérieures - richesse, pauvreté, santé, maladie, gloire, anonymat - sont indifférentes . Nous ne devenons ni meilleurs ni pires selon que nous les possédions ou non. Ce qui compte, c'est la manière dont nous les gérons, dont nous réagissons aux événements que la vie nous réserve.
Pour les stoïciens, une vie vertueuse est une vie vécue en accord avec la nature - la nature du cosmos et la nature rationnelle de l'être humain. Cela signifie accepter sereinement ce qui ne peut être maîtrisé et agir avec excellence dans ce qui dépend de nous: nos jugements, nos choix et nos actions.
