En mars 1914, deux personnes se rencontrèrent à Pondichéry: Sri Aurobindo, visionnaire Indien et leader du mouvement d'indépendance de l'Inde, qui a échappé à l'arrestation des Britanniques et s'est réfugié à Pondichéry, et Mirra Alfassa, l'épouse d'un homme politique français qui sera plus tard connue sous le nom de la Mère.
