Dans ces histoires courtes, l'auteur utilise la même technique littéraire que dans certains de ses ouvrages précédents. Les histoires sont racontées, en grande partie, à la première personne du singulier. Le livre possède une autre particularité, à savoir que le personnage principal de chaque histoire porte le même prénom et le même nom: Arnold Schrüb.
Les personnages sont certes différents d'un texte à l'autre, mais ils s'appellent tous Arnold Schrüb ! Cela donne une étrange unité au livre qui, par ailleurs, est déjà délirant en soi. Ce côté surréaliste et cette noirceur sont, pourrait-on dire, la signature de Philippe Pfeiffer. Cet auteur écrit en miniaturiste, et s'en donne à coeur joie pour élaborer des variations sur ses thèmes de prédilection, au premier rang desquels s'inscrit la mort sociale.
