Un soir, dans un train presque vide, il aperçoit un chat blanc sans visage. Autour de son cou pend une petite clé dorée. Elias le suit. Derrière la porte entre deux wagons, il découvre un royaume impossible: le Pays des Merveilles.
Dans ce monde, les gens fatigués sont appelés Alice. Peu à peu, ils oublient leur vrai nom, leurs souvenirs, leur ancienne vie. Certains se perdent dans la beauté. D'autres dans la colère, le sommeil, les miroirs ou l'oubli.
Avec l'aide de Baudelaire, une jeune fille aux longues tresses remplies de clés, Elias devra retrouver les pages perdues du Livre de la Première Alice et atteindre la Porte du Réveil. Mais chaque étape lui révèle une vérité plus difficile: parfois, ce qui ressemble à un refuge peut devenir une prison.
