Fortune's Fool is a novel written by Julian Hawthorne, the son of renowned American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The book is set in New York City during the late 19th century and tells the story of a man named Richard Shackford, who is a successful businessman and pillar of society. However, Richard's life takes a turn for the worse when he falls in love with a woman named Alice, who is already engaged to another man.As Richard becomes more and more obsessed with Alice, his business ventures begin to fail and he loses the respect of his peers. Eventually, he becomes destitute and is forced to live on the streets. Despite his misfortunes, Richard remains convinced that Alice is his true love and he continues to pursue her, even as she marries another man.Fortune's Fool is a tale of love, obsession, and the destructive power of desire. Hawthorne's vivid descriptions of New York City and its inhabitants provide a rich backdrop for the story, while his exploration of the human psyche and its darker impulses makes for a compelling read. The novel is a classic example of American literary realism and remains a popular work of fiction to this day. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
