As unemployment, poverty, labor unrest, gambling, bootlegging, and organized crime spread across North Texas, Fort Worth police officers were forced to confront a rising tide of violence. At the center of many of these investigations were homicide detectives A. C. Howerton and D. S. Harris, whose work helped professionalize criminal investigations in the city during the 1930s and 1940s.

The book follows murders and investigations that unfolded in tourist camps, labor camps, dance halls, alleyways, rooming houses, and oilfield communities.
