Seven kids. Seven trades. This is the one who has to go back and look again.
Mike Bautista is eleven years old and he is the slowest kid on the block, and the reason for that is going to take a while to explain.
He is the last one out of the shop every night. He is the one still standing in a crawlspace with a flashlight after everybody else has washed up. The other six kids have a trade apiece - water, fire, wire, heat, ground, doors - and Mike Bautista does not have one, and it eats at him for years.
What he has instead is a grandmother who came from the Philippines at twenty-six on a nurse's visa and worked thirty-one years of night shifts being the only person on that floor who would go slow with a frightened person. He grew up in her house watching her do it. Nobody ever sat him down and taught it to him.
So Mike goes behind all of them and checks. Every job. Every time. Long after anybody asked him to, and long after it stopped being funny to them.
And on the night the crew is tired and the job is finished and everybody wants to go home, the quiet one says four words that keep a family alive - and finds out that the thing he thought was missing in him was the whole entire point of him.
A big-hearted San Francisco story about the last kid out the door, and why somebody always has to go back and look again.
Fog City Twice is the seventh and final book in the Fog City Fixers series. Read them in order: Fog City Girl Fixer - Fog City Flame - Fog City Spark - Fog City Iron - Fog City Ground - Fog City Key - Fog City Twice
