In A Floor Beneath the Abyss, Leland Allen Nelson uses Jack London's The People of the Abyss as a starting point for a broader argument about poverty, dignity, work, children, and the minimum conditions required for human life.
This is not a book arguing for equal outcomes. It is not a defense of socialism, capitalism, communism, or any political label. It asks a simpler question: how far should a society allow a human being to fall before the basic machinery of responsibility breaks?
The book argues that poverty is not only lack of money. It is lack of sleep, safety, sanitation, storage, privacy, address, medical access, work paths, and dignity. Once people fall far enough, problems begin to multiply. Hunger creates weakness. No sleep destroys judgment. No address blocks work. No safety prevents learning. No dignity turns help into humiliation.
Drawing from Jack London's descent into London's East End, Nelson connects historical poverty with modern homelessness, children's unequal starting lines, tent cities, tiny homes, AI tutoring, alcohol as escape, and the idea of a practical minimum floor beneath the Abyss.
The central argument is plain:
A society does not need to guarantee equal outcomes. But it should not force people to live the test of life from starvation, fear, exhaustion, and humiliation.
The floor should be basic, not luxurious. Firm, not sentimental. Humane, not bureaucratic. Food, shelter, sanitation, security, storage, address, basic medical care, a fallback job, rules, and a path upward.
Above that floor, people should remain free to rise, fail, build, compete, own, work, and become unequal in all the natural ways human beings become unequal.
Manage the floor, not the life.
