You ask how school was. You get fine. That is the whole conversation, and it will be the whole conversation for about three years unless something changes.
This is a book for the adult, about a place the adult cannot see.
Fine Is All You Get is written for the parent or carer of a child between roughly eleven and fourteen - the years when the amount of information reaching you drops off a cliff and nobody warns you it is about to. It is not a book about adolescence and there is no theory in it. It is closer to a description of how an unfamiliar institution actually works, plus the small number of moves that reliably work better than the obvious ones.

SEVEN PARTS
WHAT IS DIFFERENT NOW - six adults instead of one, movement all day, marks visible on a portal within a day, friendship groups that dissolve because the thing holding them together has been removed, and a school that will not contact you until something is already serious.
A DAY, FROM THE INSIDE - where the hours go, and why the difficult parts are never the lessons. They are the unstructured windows: before the bell, break, lunch, the changing rooms, the journey, the four minutes at the end.
QUESTIONS THAT DO NOT GET FINE - why a seven-hour question gets a one-word answer, why the best questions have a fact in them, why conversations happen sideways and in motion, and why waiting eight uncomfortable seconds does more than any clever wording.
STEPPING IN, AND NOT - the judgement nobody can make for you. What is genuinely theirs to handle, what is never theirs, and why the two kinds of mistake do not cost the same.
WHEN THEY TELL YOU SOMETHING BIG - the first four minutes, in detail. What to say, what not to say, and what to write down that same evening.
TALKING TO THE SCHOOL - who to contact and in what order, what to put in the first message, what a school can and cannot tell you, and what to do when nothing changes.
WHAT THEY ONLY SAY IF YOU REACT A CERTAIN WAY - the unglamorous habits that decide whether a fifteen-year-old still says things out loud.
EVERY CHAPTER HAS THE SAME SHAPE
The situation. What is probably going on. What you can do - three things, not a programme. What not to do, usually the natural one. And a single line under IF YOU ONLY DO ONE THING.
WHAT THIS BOOK WILL NOT DO
It will not promise anything about your child - not their behaviour, their results, their friendships or their happiness. It will not tell you that any of this is your fault; there is an essay in the middle explaining why that matters practically and not just as reassurance. It offers no psychology: no diagnoses, no clinical terms used as labels, no techniques borrowed from therapy. And it is not legal advice.
Nothing about bodies, weight, food, sleep or appearance appears anywhere in it. No statistics, no studies, no real cases - every situation was invented while writing, and the book says so at the front rather than hiding it. No apps, platforms or brands are named.
The author is not a teacher, a psychologist, a paediatrician, a school counsellor or a lawyer, and says so on the copyright page, in the introduction, and in every chapter that needs it. Where something needs somebody qualified, the chapter stops and names who to contact.
