Twenty-four days. One fractured family. A recovery built on records no one can trust.
Daniel Mercer understands supply chains, not survival. When a state-aligned Iranian cyberattack corrupts payments, identities, and freight records, ordinary life across Central Kentucky begins to come apart in stages. Banks show contradictory balances. Pharmacies cannot verify patients. Fuel moves only for those with the right paper, contact, or favor.
Daniel's family is scattered from Lexington to Midway and Frankfort, and each hour makes the roads less reliable. To bring them home, he turns maps, printed ledgers, borrowed influence, and stubborn discipline into a rescue plan. Yet the crisis also exposes the secrets he meant to keep: a threatened job, a dangerous debt, and a marriage already close to breaking.
Then the system appears to recover. Stores reopen. Freight rolls under armed escort. A guarded distribution program offers medicine for Laura and protection for the family's supplies. Against the warnings of those closest to him, Daniel wagers nearly everything on the promise that institutions still mean what their documents say.
At 2:17 p.m. on Day Twenty-Four, the lights go out.
The False Recovery is the first novel in The Ash Commonwealth, a dark post-apocalyptic political thriller about family, power, and the fragile line between order and control.
