The heart of the memoir centers on Janie's devastating diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, also known as FTD, a progressive disease that gradually affected her speech, personality, behavior, independence, and familiar sense of self. After promising Janie that he would not place her in a facility, Bob becomes her primary caregiver and carries the emotional, physical, spiritual, and daily responsibilities of caring for the woman he loves. Over the course of eight and a half painful years, he watches helplessly as dementia slowly takes away pieces of the vibrant woman he had known, loved, and shared his life with for decades.
