End of the Tether is a novella by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1902. The story follows the life of Captain Whalley, an aging and impoverished captain of a steamship in the Far East. Whalley is struggling to keep his ship afloat and provide for his wife and daughter, who he deeply loves. However, his financial troubles and failing health make it difficult for him to keep up with the demands of his job. As his situation worsens, Whalley becomes increasingly desperate and turns to drastic measures to save his ship and his family. He makes deals with unscrupulous businessmen, takes on risky voyages, and even contemplates suicide. Meanwhile, his daughter Nita falls in love with a young sailor, who becomes embroiled in Whalley's troubles. The novella explores themes of love, loyalty, and the struggle for survival in a harsh and unforgiving world. It also delves into the psychological and emotional turmoil of a man facing the end of his career and the end of his life. With its vivid descriptions of life on a steamship in the Far East, End of the Tether is a powerful and poignant work of fiction by one of the greatest writers of the modern era.The sacred edifice, standing in solemn isolation amongst the converging avenues of enormous trees, as if to put grave thoughts of heaven into the hours of ease, pre- sented a closed Gothic portal to the light and glory of the west.
