From Khrushchev's denunciation of Stalin and hopes for reform to the long Brezhnev era of stability and stagnation, the Soviet system appeared formidable even as economic weakness, political rigidity, and public cynicism steadily accumulated beneath the surface.
Finally, the narrative turns to Mikhail Gorbachev and the dramatic final years of the Soviet experiment. His policies of glasnost and perestroika, intended to save the system, instead helped unleash demands for freedom, political reform, and national independence that Moscow could no longer contain. The collapse of communist rule in Eastern Europe, rising nationalism within the Soviet republics, and the failed August 1991 coup culminated in the astonishing dissolution of a superpower into fifteen independent nations.
But the Soviet story did not end in 1991. Empire of the Soviets explores the economic upheaval and political turmoil that followed, the divergent paths of the former Soviet republics, and the enduring influence of Soviet institutions, memories, and ideas on modern Russia.
