Fifty-three purple X's on the calendar above Ellie's bed. Then the phone buzzes at dinner: tonight.
They drive to the hidden beach as the sun touches the water - pink, then orange, then the deep purple-blue of almost-night. Elise is already there. Olive trots onto the sand and sits down without anyone telling her to. The stars come out one by one, and everyone waits.
Then a tiny flipper pokes up through the sand.
The Night They Came Home is the fourth episode in the Ellie series: a hushed, moonlit picture book about waiting a long time for something and getting to watch it happen. A sequel to The Secret Beach, illustrated in soft watercolor.
A read-aloud for ages 2 to 8 - and for anyone who has ever counted under their breath to be sure they all made it.
24 pages, full color, paperback.
