The Princess and the King's Affliction
In a prosperous kingdom ruled by the beloved King Ethar, his 17-year-old daughter, Princess Eliza, resists feminine royal duties in favor of riding and martial arts. Despite her father's gentle discouragement, she is a skilled warrior trained in swordplay. One morning, after inspecting his guards, King Ethar experiences a sudden premonition of war and collapses into an unexplainable, coma-like trance. The palace doctor determines the illness is caused by magic rather than disease and advises that only elves-wise, spiritual beings who keep their secrets guarded-possess the knowledge to break such spells.
Journey into the Magical Forest
Defying her governess and the royal court, Eliza rejects a military escort and sets off alone into the mysterious forest to seek a cure, believing a peaceful approach is best. Deep within the silent woods, she meets a charming, black-haired youth named Espen, who notices her courage, engages her in witty conversation, and reveals he is half-elf. Espen offers her food and shelter, comforting her as she explains her mission to save her father. He directs her to seek out the Rain King at the mountain peak for help.
Revelations at the Crystal Throne
Eliza reaches the vast stone castle of the Rain King, where she meets Yakan, a sweet-natured elf who introduces himself as the Rain King and the brother of the true Elf King. Espen suddenly appears, revealing that he is the feared, powerful Elf King and Water Wizard-a figure notorious among humans for his cruelty. Outraged at being deceived, Eliza draws her sword and holds it to Espen's throat, but his calm, playful demeanor diffuses her anger. Though Espen admits he cannot undo the spell directly, he and Yakan direct her to the Sun King at the Frozen Mountain, who holds the secret to the antidote.
Tests of the Giant Guardian
En route, Eliza encounters a massive, roaring river with no bridge. She discovers the hut of an ancient, blind giant who was once the Sun's guardian. The giant puts Eliza through tests of character-asking her to help repair his roof and clean his floor, which she does diligently and without complaint. Having proven her humble and compassionate spirit, the giant reveals that the treacherous river is merely a magical optical illusion and instructs her to walk right through it, which she successfully does.
Warnings and the Chessboard Vision
As Eliza progresses through the forest, various magical creatures-a talking owl, her healed hands magically restored by Espen, and two talking unicorns-warn her that Espen is dangerous and to beware of him. A unicorn grants her a painful vision of the future structured like a chessboard: her father is a white King used as a pawn, Espen appears as a dark, dangerous figure, and a mysterious black King orchestrates the conflict.
Panicked by Espen's sudden appearance with a terrifying look of rage, Eliza flees toward her final destination. However, once her fear subsides, she feels immense guilt for distrusting Espen after all his acts of care. Resolved to complete her mission and apologize to him, she reaches the shimmering, golden Palace of the Sun.
