Down in the deep blue sea lives Eli, a gentle green eel who wants what every child wants-to be seen, included, and loved for who he is. Some reef creatures keep their distance because of how Eli looks, swimming away before they get to know him. Then a small moment of bravery lets Eli's kindness shine, and hearts begin to change. With a comforting cadence and cozy undersea art, Eli the Eel is a heartwarming rhyming picture book about friendship, courage, and acceptance.
The story's bouncy, read-aloud rhyme makes it easy for grownups to share and for kids to chime in. Eli's journey invites conversation about first impressions and empathy: what does it feel like to be left out, and how can we welcome someone new? The message is simple and empowering: sometimes the bravest thing you can do is be exactly who you are. Children will recognize their own worries about fitting in and cheer as Eli discovers that kindness lights the way to friendship.
Ideal for ages 3-7 and perfect for preschool through grade 2, this book supports social-emotional learning at home and in classrooms. It pairs naturally with units on friendship, feelings, and ocean life, and it works well for bedtime, storytime, counseling groups, and back-to-school transitions. The gentle length and musical rhythm suit the attention span of young listeners, while the clear theme helps adults open age-appropriate discussions about not judging by appearances and being yourself.
Readers who enjoy tender animal tales with a big heart, such as The Invisible Boy, The Rainbow Fish, and The Pout-Pout Fish, will find a new friend in Eli. Warm, reassuring, and uplifting, Eli the Eel reminds children that true friends look beneath the surface and that courage can be quiet, kind, and contagious.
Eli the Eel is a feel-good story for every child who has ever felt different and for every grownup who wants to help them belong.
