45,000 Suspects Rode That Cage. One of Them Never Got Off.

At three minutes past four on the morning of Sunday, October 27th, 1929, the night manager of the Ashford Hotel crosses the lobby to check on a service elevator that has been silent too long. She finds it stopped between the ninth and tenth floors, the outer gate shut, the inner cage still. Inside is the body of the night elevator operator. By dawn the hotel detectives have their man in custody: a floor porter whose coat matches a fibre found on the wire.
