At three minutes past four on the morning of Sunday, October 27th, 1929, the night manager of the Ashford Hotel crosses the lobby to check on a service elevator that has been silent too long. She finds it stopped between the ninth and tenth floors, the outer gate shut, the inner cage still. Inside is the body of the night elevator operator. By dawn the hotel detectives have their man in custody: a floor porter whose coat matches a fibre found on the wire.
He did not do it. This book is how you prove it - and how you identify the real killer from among the forty-five thousand persons on the Ashford's night payroll.
Every suspect is a unique combination of six attributes: name, post, level, item, coat, day off. That is 15 × 6 × 5 × 5 × 5 × 4 = 45,000 permutations, each printed as a compact register code at the back of the book. Twenty-four numbered clues describe the killer without ever naming an attribute value. You will not read that the killer wore a plum coat. You will read that the number of vowels in the killer's coat is even, and it will fall to you to test each of the coats in the register against that property.
Six kinds of clue, all built on honest logic: letter counts, alphabet arithmetic, cross-references between attribute pairs, ordinal comparisons, conditionals, exclusive disjunctions that force you to hold two branches alive until a later clue kills one, and a single alibi that exonerates the accused. The survivor curve descends from 45,000 to exactly one on the final clue. Perfect play is above seven hours; realistic play, across many sittings, is around thirty. The difficulty comes from the size of the search space, not from convoluted wording.
The killer's name is printed nowhere in this book. Their identity is encoded on the Sealed Name page as Vigenère ciphertext, keyed on the six register codes only a correct solver can produce, with the shifts checksum-coupled so that one wrong attribute scrambles every letter. A Final Lock page carries five numeric checksums that let you verify your deduction without being told the answer.
