In Nemedis, value is not merely discussed. It is measured, certified, revised-and occasionally corrected by the office photocopier.
Ven arrives at the House of Assigned Worth as a young stagiaire, eager to understand its elegant systems. Buildings display their fluctuating value. Coffee is denominated according to significance. Reputation acquires measurable weight. Even doubt has an officially designated chair.
But as Ven learns to assign numbers to properties, institutions, communities and human lives, a troubling question begins to follow him: do the instruments measure what truly matters, or only what enough people have agreed to notice?
Beyond the House, a food vendor keeps different accounts, a neglected district survives through exchanges no certificate can capture, and an elderly deaf cat presides over a small household whose worth never appears on any screen.
Economy is a philosophical novel about money, reputation, care, bureaucracy and the dangerous distance between a measurement and the reality it claims to represent. Its humour is dry, surreal and quietly unsettling; its concerns are serious, but its world remains warm, strange and deeply human.
The third standalone novel set in Nemedis-following History and Identity-Economy can be read independently. Each book explores a different human discipline inside a civilization where abstractions have become part of everyday reality.
For readers who enjoy literary speculative fiction, philosophical satire, humane institutional comedy, and novels that leave questions open rather than reducing them to answers.
