The Ecclesiastical History is a book written by Scholasticus, also known as Socrates. It is a historical account of the Christian Church from the time of Christ until the early 5th century. The book is divided into seven books, each covering a different period of Church history. The first book covers the life of Jesus Christ and the apostles, while the second book covers the period from the apostolic age to the reign of Emperor Constantine. The third book covers the Arian controversy, while the fourth book covers the Nestorian and Eutychian controversies. The fifth book covers the reign of Emperor Theodosius and the rise of the monastic movement, while the sixth book covers the reign of Emperor Justinian and the Council of Chalcedon. The seventh and final book covers the period from the Council of Chalcedon to the time of Scholasticus.Throughout the book, Scholasticus provides detailed accounts of the various controversies and schisms that arose within the Church, as well as the various councils and synods that were held to address these issues. He also provides biographical information on many of the key figures in Church history, including bishops, popes, and emperors.Overall, The Ecclesiastical History is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the Christian Church, and it remains an important work of Church history to this day. This is the version by SOCRATES SCHOLASTICUS, considered the more accurate. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
