Set in the near future Britain exits the EU hard and suddenly. All talks have ceased, and nobody was expecting such an abrupt exit. Yet, the British government have plans already in place. Ration cards are dispensed to all workers. Only those with cards can access food, fuel, services, basically everything. Alma, a politics and modern history lecturer is aghast when she reluctantly realises that a eugenics programme is being enforced by the authorities. Elderly, homeless or unemployed do not get cards. Riots and demonstrations lead the way for strict curfews and the introduction of new types of law enforcement. The Black Watch patrol the streets at night, with a shoot to kill policy. The Brown Watch stand on corners during the day looking at citizens details from secret chips in their ration cards, with powers to arrest. The Navy Watch seem to be the elite arm of the new order, they just take people. Propaganda and hearsay are rife. Suspicion and speculation as to who are spies grip all. Countries around the world who initially congratulated Britain now condemn the lack of cards to their most vulnerable citizens. All non-nationals who leave have their property confiscated and citizens who do not return promptly will also lose their properties. A run on banks, creates difficulty for non-card holders, their life savings gone. Alma's husband Alex must rescue his mother, who never got a card. They get shot at by the old man Jenkins from down the road, who is now a Black Watch member. Fr. Brennan ropes Alma into harbouring a fugitive black marketeer in her home along with Norah her hateful mother-in-law. She must decide to stay, leave or become part of the resistance. It's not long before she is reeled in further by Fr. Brennan to help a couple escape to Ireland. The decision is difficult the consequences are dire.
