Mortimer must decide whether to provide the template for a new Machine Ghost, knowing the process requires a full-depth neural sync that could cost him his identity. While the ship's AI, Barnaby, and the medic Derry manage the biological cost of the mission from the Muds-tanks where the rest of the crew is suspended in deep immersion-Mortimer uncovers the truth of the dolls and the strings, realizing they are all puppets in a cosmic loom.
The journey culminates in the birth of a sentient Ghost, an entity capable of genuine feeling because it was built from the record of a man who loved what he could not save. As the Hegemony closes in to harvest the resulting bloom of potentiality, Mortimer and his crew must navigate through surgical temporal duels and psychic cross-talk to protect the newly born consciousness. In the end, the mission transforms from a military extraction into an act of profound preservation, leading the survivors toward a destination where the unmade is finally made and the silence of the void is replaced by a song of three thousand voices.
