Dass Büchersammlungen nicht nur Zulieferer der benötigten Literatur sind, sondern auch selbst in Geschichte und Gegenwart etwas über Literatur und ihre Rezeption aussagen können, hat nicht erst die moderne Literatur- soziologie festgestellt. Die Deutsche Bibliotheksgeschichte will mit der historischen Entwicklung des deutschen Bibliothekswesens von den ersten Klosterbibliotheken der Karolingerzeit bis zur modernen Gebrauchsbibliothek vertraut machen. Dabei werden die Einbettung in das Bildungswesen, die Voraussetzungen (wer gründete Bibliotheken und warum), die Bestände (welche Bücher wurden ge- sammelt) und die Benutzer betrachtet. Exemplarisch wird die Ent- stehung wichtiger Zentren der deutschen literarischen Überlieferung verfolgt. Ein Blick auf die Entwicklung nach 1945 rundet die Arbeit ab.
