Je besser diese von klein auf ausgebildet ist, umso differenzierter, gewählter und kommunikativer kann sich der Mensch mitteilen. Sprache ist selbstverständlich und alltäglich, ja sogar überlebenswichtig. Doch wer von uns macht sich während seines üblichen Tagesablaufes schon differenzierte Gedanken über Entstehung, Gebrauch und Nutzen der Sprache? Ferdinand de Saussure hat Sprache als Zeichensystem konzipiert, Karl Bühler sieht Sprache als geformtes Gerät. Für die Pragmatik wiederum ist Sprache ein zweckorientiertes Handlungssystem, das mental verankert ist; für andere das Medium der Gedankenbildung schlechthin (Wilhelm von Humboldt). Auch die Philosophie beschäftigt sich seit geraumer Zeit mit dem Phänomen Sprache, wie wir bestimmte Dinge zum Ausdruck bringen, wie z. B. unsere Gefühle. So wird in den Kognitionswissenschaften erforscht, warum ein Mensch erkennen kann wie sein Gegenüber sich fühlt, wenn er sein lachendes Gesicht sieht. Der österreichisch-englische Philosoph Ludwig Wittgenstein geht noch viel weiter; er stellt sich die Frage ob es überhaupt möglich ist zu wissen, dass zwei Menschen das Gleiche meinen, wenn sie ein Gefühl, ihr eigenes, individuelles Gefühl z. B. als Glück bezeichnen. Woher kann ich wissen, dass mein Gesprächspartner das Gleiche fühlt wie ich? Und wenn dies nicht der Fall sein sollte, ist es dann überhaupt von Bedeutung? Wie kommen wir überhaupt dazu bestimmte Dinge, wie auch Emotionen mit bestimmten Begriffen zu bezeichnen; könnte nicht jeder sich ein eigenes, individuelles Wort für sein eigenes, individuelles Gefühl ausdenken?
