Witte muren stelt voor een biologische variabele toe te voegen aan de geschiedenis van moderne macht. Het boek stelt de vraag of de materiële cultuur van Europese elites - loodwit, cosmetica, vaatwerk, glazuren, kristal, geneesmiddelen, renovatiestof en kinderkamers vol lichte, gepolijste oppervlakken - ongemerkt de geesten kon veranderen van degenen die de wereld van de Nieuwe Tijd bestuurden.
Het boek beweert niet dat lood de geschiedenis op zichzelf verklaart. Oorlog, religie, erfenis, klimaat, instellingen, economie en toeval blijven hun plaats behouden. Lood verschijnt hier als een ontbrekende variabele: traag, cumulatief, sociaal gestratificeerd en het gevaarlijkst voor kinderen. Omdat lood de zich ontwikkelende hersenen beschadigt, vooral de prefrontale systemen die verbonden zijn met zelfbeheersing, planning, impulsremming en het beoordelen van gevolgen, kan chronische blootstelling het gedragsprofiel van elitefamilies over meerdere generaties hebben verschoven zonder een onmiddellijk zichtbare medische catastrofe te veroorzaken.
Vertrekkend van het contrast tussen Scandinavische rode oker en de witte interieurs van elites volgt het boek lood door biologie, architectuur, hofcultuur, politieke theorie, historische casussen en de vele olifanten in de kamer die conventionele verklaringen vaak buiten beeld laten. Het maakt onderscheid tussen vastgestelde toxicologische feiten, historische reconstructies en vermoedens van de auteur, en behandelt de loodhypothese niet als een gesloten antwoord, maar als een toetsbaar kader.
