La Peyrouse is a Dutch-language drama by August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue, a prolific German dramatist and writer. The play centers on the historical figure of Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, a French naval officer and explorer whose expedition vanished in the Pacific Ocean. Kotzebue's work explores themes of exploration, loss, and the human condition against the backdrop of this famous maritime mystery.
This edition offers readers the opportunity to engage with 18th-century Dutch theater and experience Kotzebue's dramatic interpretation of a significant historical event. The play provides insight into the cultural and historical context of the time, reflecting the fascination with exploration and the anxieties surrounding the unknown.
