A captain keeps a count of the dead he cannot pay and spends the men he loves to buy an hour more. An exiled noblewoman, sent to prove her visions or drown for them, finds she would rather be spent than kept safe.
There is no victory in this. The sea cannot be beaten. It can only be slowed, and only by a keeper willing to be spent, an inch at a time, in plain sight of the one who loves her and has to stand on the shore and keep the count.
