There are four hundred gods of drunkenness. Not one god. Four hundred, and they are all rabbits, and they are brothers. Which one you got told you what kind of drunk you were going to be. They get one entry between them and it is called Four Hundred Rabbits. Fifty Aztec figures. Fifty drinks. Not one measurement anywhere in it. That is the format, not an oversight. No ounces, no shots, no parts, no jigger and no shaker. Every drink here is built in the bottle the mixer came in: you pour some off to make room, you put things in, you put the cap back on and turn it over. Quantity is the container. You already know how to do this. What replaces the measurement is the flavour. In a measured drink the design lives in the ratios; here it lives in which product and which variant, so every ingredient in this book names one. That is also why the spirit is written generically. It says vodka, or coconut rum, and never a brand, because in a drink carrying candy and fruit punch the bottle you bought is a price signal and not a flavour decision. Mayahuel is the maguey plant that pulque is made from, and she has four hundred breasts, which is where the four hundred rabbits came from. She gets Green Mother. Moctezuma II is reported to have drunk fifty cups of chocolate a day, unsweetened, out of gold, and thrown the cups in the lake afterwards. He gets Fifty Cups. Coyolxauhqui led four hundred siblings against her own mother, lost, and was thrown down a mountain in pieces and put in the sky. She gets Scattered Moon. Every character gets two facing pages and nothing is continued overleaf. Who they were on the left, the drink on the right. You never turn the page in the middle of making something. Ten of the fifty have no alcohol in them at all and nothing put in their place. They are not shoved in an appendix at the back, because they are characters. They are marked in the contents and listed together at the end for whoever is driving. The names are less difficult than they look and the book opens with the rule that gets you most of the way. Human sacrifice is in here, because it is in the material and four of these fifty cannot be told honestly without it. It is stated where it belongs and then left alone. One of eight. Norse, Greek, Eldritch, Egyptian, Aztec, Japanese, Polynesian and Mesopotamian. The fifth sun is the one we are living in and it is also going to end. Four hundred rabbits say have one anyway.
