Dr. Johnson, a Play is a vibrant dramatic exploration of the life and wit of Samuel Johnson, the legendary 18th-century lexicographer and literary giant. Written by the renowned bibliophile A. Edward Newton, this four-act play recreates the intellectual and social atmosphere of Georgian London, focusing on the character and conversations of the Great Cham of literature.
The work draws heavily from James Boswell's monumental biography and other contemporary records, utilizing authentic dialogue to bring the historical figures of the era to the stage. Throughout the play, readers encounter Johnson's celebrated circle, including James Boswell, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Oliver Goldsmith, and David Garrick. Newton focuses on Johnson's domestic life, his deep friendships, and his undeniable brilliance as a conversationalist and moralist.
As a piece of biographical drama, Dr. Johnson, a Play serves as both a scholarly tribute and an engaging theatrical experience. It captures the essence of Johnson's personality-his eccentricities, his melancholy, and his formidable intellect-while providing a vivid window into the coffeehouse culture and literary salons that defined an age. This play remains an essential read for anyone interested in the history of English letters and the enduring legacy of Samuel Johnson.
