Nobody in 1943 assumed you had a lawn.
The picture most people carry of the wartime home-front garden is a house, a back fence, and rows of vegetables in dark earth. It is not wrong. It is just a small part of what was actually happening.
Those campaigns were pushed into every space that could be persuaded to grow something. Vacant lots organised block by block. School grounds. Parks. Company land. Rooftops. Window boxes. Containers, where there was no ground at all. They were aimed at an urban population, most of whom had no garden - and the assumption was never that everybody had land. It was that everybody had somewhere.
THE DOORSTEP VICTORY GARDEN is written on the same assumption.
FOR THE SPACE YOU ACTUALLY HAVE
A balcony. A concrete yard you are not allowed to dig. A fire escape you must not obstruct. A strip beside a parking space. One deep windowsill facing the right way. A corner of a plot somebody else runs.
None of those is a compromised version of a real garden. They are gardens with different constraints - and the constraints are the interesting part, because growing in a container is not a scaled-down version of growing in the ground. It is a related but genuinely different craft, with its own failure modes. Most of this book is about those.
WHY YOUR CONTAINER PLANTS KEEP DYING
Not drought. Usually the opposite.
Roots need air as well as water. A pot with nowhere for surplus to go stays saturated, the roots suffocate, and the plant wilts and yellows - which looks exactly like thirst, so you water more, and finish it off. That spiral, plus garden soil in a pot, plus a container too small to buffer anything, accounts for most first-year losses on a doorstep.

Wet growing medium is heavy, and a balcony, roof, deck, or ledge has a load limit that is invisible. This book gives no weight figures and no fixing specifications, deliberately, and tells you instead to ask your building manager, landlord, or a qualified professional before anything goes on a raised structure. Never obstruct a fire escape. Never put a container on a rail. That advice has nothing to do with vegetables and is more important than all the rest.
