What follows is a year of daily work. Meanwhile, journalist Vivian Chen and her brother Daniel - a carpenter who spent fourteen years inside a closed community - travel to the emigrant settlements that formed after the crossing. Communities where thousands withdrew from the world to explore consciousness in silence. Some are genuine. Some aren't. The difference is not ideology. The difference is whether the community was built to receive or built to contain.
Thomas, Nina's father, brings scrambled eggs to the lab every Saturday. The eggs are always right. The care is rendered as heat. Thomas crossed the threshold between cracking and cheese, and he carries the crossing in the ordinary the way the ordinary has always carried the cosmic in this series.
The book ends not with a breakthrough but with a word. Nina draws the morning as it is. Turns the paper over. Picks up a pencil - not the crayon. The tool of an adult.
